A letter from the Vella team

If you’re here, you’re probably furnishing a home. Maybe your first. It’s a big thing to get right, and buying furniture online doesn’t make it easier: you can’t sit on the sofa, you can’t run a hand over the stone, and then you wait weeks for it to arrive.

We built Vella to make that feel less like a leap. Every piece is built to order, so there’s no warehouse of stock waiting to be sold, and no middlemen between us and the people making your furniture.

So we went to China and found the factories ourselves.

China makes a lot of the world’s furniture, including for premium brands overseas. But for every excellent factory there are many mediocre ones, and the difference doesn’t show on a website or in a brochure. It shows on the factory floor, so that’s where we went.

Every partner factory we work with is one we’ve vetted in person. If a factory doesn’t meet our standard, we don’t work with them. Why we source from China

What we check on the factory floor

  • How the frames are built and joined
  • What’s inside the cushions
  • How consistent the upholstery and finishes are, batch to batch
  • How the factory checks its own work

And every piece is inspected before it leaves the factory.

Once you order, we get in touch personally and keep you posted the whole way: factory pickup, ocean freight, customs, and the last stretch up to your flat, where our team assembles and installs it. From order to doorstep that’s usually 30 to 35 business days. We’d rather tell you that up front than promise next week.

Our very first sale was a dining table for a 4-room flat in Tengah. Before the customer decided, we made a 3D render so he could see it in his own home. On delivery day, we installed it ourselves. That’s still the kind of care we want every order to get.
