Finding room for a lounge chair

A lounge chair needs less floor than most people expect. Most fit within roughly a metre square; add some legroom in front and a side table beside it, and a spare corner of an HDB living room or master bedroom becomes a reading spot.

For conversation, angle the chair towards the sofa within easy talking distance and keep a clear path of around 75–90 cm past it. If it's going by a window, remember that strong afternoon sun fades fabric and dries out leather over time.

As a rule of thumb, a pair of lounge chairs facing the sofa across a coffee table makes a comfortable conversation set in a 4-room or 5-room living room. In a 3-room flat, one chair angled into a corner is often enough.

Leather, fabric and the frame beneath

Most of our leather lounge chairs use top-grain leather, which softens with use and is at home in rooms that run the aircon. Fabric chairs range from scratch-resistant upholstery to cotton, corduroy and bouclé, and many come in the same colour palette as our sofas, so it's easy to coordinate or contrast. Frames include white ash, walnut, bentwood and steel, and a couple of designs rock gently. Each product page lists the exact materials.

Care in a humid climate

Vacuum fabric chairs regularly and blot spills rather than rubbing them. Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth and condition it every six months or so. In a room that stays closed up and humid, a little airflow goes a long way against mould. Wood frames only need dusting along the grain.
