Getting the height and size right

Beside a sofa, a side table works best with its top within a few centimetres of the sofa arm, so a cup is easy to reach without stretching. Beside a bed, aim for a top roughly level with the top of your mattress.

Footprint matters in an HDB bedroom. As a rule of thumb, leave about 60 cm beside the bed for a bedside table and for getting in and out; a table 40–50 cm wide usually sits comfortably in that space. Slim tables tuck beside a lounge chair or into the corner of an L-shaped sofa, and a slightly lower table beside a reading chair keeps a book or lamp within reach without crowding it.

Care for Singapore's humidity

Use coasters on wood and marble, dry any condensation promptly, and keep tables a little off the wall so air can circulate.
