How many chairs, and how much space

As a rule of thumb, allow about 60 cm of table edge per person and around 90 cm between the table and the wall behind each chair, so people can pull out a chair and sit without a squeeze. Check a chair's width before you plan the count: slimmer chairs make it easier to fit six around a 160–180 cm table, while wider, armchair-style seats need more room each.

Look at your table's legs too. Pedestal and tripod bases leave more room for knees and chair legs than four corner legs do. Chairs are sold separately, so you can order exactly the number your table needs, or mix two styles for the ends.

Wood, leather or fabric

Our solid wood chairs, many in oak, bring natural grain and are easy to wipe down after meals. Upholstered chairs range from top-grain leather to PU and PVC faux leather, and from linen-blend to scratch-resistant fabric, on solid wood or carbon steel frames. Each product page states exactly which, so you know what you're getting. A few designs add woven rattan for a lighter, airier look. For long dinners, a padded seat over high-density foam is kinder than bare wood.

Care in a humid climate

Wipe wooden chairs with a soft, slightly damp cloth along the grain and dry them off; don't let water sit on the joints. Wipe leather and faux leather after meals and condition real leather every six months or so. Fabric seats respond best to blotting rather than rubbing. Keep chairs out of strong afternoon sun to slow fading. Our guide to caring for solid wood covers the rest.

Dining Chairs: common questions

How many dining chairs fit around a 160 cm table?
As a rule of thumb, six: two on each long side and one at each end, with about 60 cm of table edge per person. Wider chairs may mean dropping the end seats, so check each chair's width on its product page.
How much space do I need behind dining chairs?
Leave around 90 cm between the table edge and the wall or cabinet behind, so people can pull out a chair and sit down comfortably. If space is tight, chairs without arms tuck in further.
Are your leather dining chairs real leather?
Some are top-grain leather and some use PU or PVC faux leather, which is easy to wipe clean. Each product page lists the exact upholstery.
Are wooden or upholstered dining chairs better for families?
Solid wood chairs are the easiest to wipe after messy meals. Upholstered seats are softer for long dinners; leather and faux leather wipe clean, and scratch-resistant fabric is a good choice with pets.
Can I buy dining chairs without a table?
Yes. Chairs are sold separately, so you can pair them with any Vella dining table or one you already own.
