What size sofa fits your HDB living room?
Start with the wall the sofa will sit against, then leave room to walk. As a rule of thumb, a 3-room living room suits a sofa of roughly 180–210 cm, a 4-room takes 210–250 cm comfortably, and 5-room and executive flats can carry 250 cm and beyond, or an L-shape. These are starting points, not limits: layouts vary between BTO and resale flats, so trust your tape measure over the flat type.
Depth matters as much as width. Allow 40–60 cm between the sofa and the coffee table, depending on how you sit, so there's room for knees and a cup, and keep a clear path of around 90 cm wherever people walk past. Fabric, leather, L-shaped or modular
Most of our fabric sofas use a scratch-resistant tech fabric, and many are water-resistant too, so spills bead long enough to blot and claws are less likely to snag. That makes fabric the practical choice with kids or pets. Our leather sofas are top-grain or full-grain leather, which softens and wears in with use, and is at its best in a room where the aircon runs often. Frames are solid wood, with high-density foam seats and down-filled back cushions on many styles.
If you want a corner, choose between a fixed L-shape and a modular sofa you can rearrange when you move flats. A few styles also have adjustable backrests or electrically adjustable seat depth, so the same sofa works for upright conversation and a lazy Sunday. Caring for a sofa in Singapore's humidity
Humidity is hard on upholstery. Vacuum fabric weekly, blot spills rather than rubbing, and keep any sofa out of strong afternoon sun to slow fading. Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth and condition it every six months or so. Leave a few centimetres between the sofa and the wall so air can move behind it; that small gap does a lot to keep mould away. Our guide to preventing mould on furniture has more.

- Both work well with a little care. Scratch- and water-resistant fabric is forgiving with kids, pets and spills, while top-grain leather suits rooms that run the aircon often and needs conditioning every six months or so.
